A government designated international airport fully equipped with customs and immigration facilities to handle international flights to and from other countries. The Raja Sansi International Airport currently handles over 150 commercial flights a week, both international and domestic serving the city of Amritsar and the state of Punjab.

A newly finished arrivals terminal opened for business in September 2005, and the new departures terminal has been operational since March 2006. Constructed of glass and steel, this new terminal is a blend of modern and Indian designs with typical Indian arches and much loved abundance of colours.

The Amritsar Raja Sansi Airport modernisation development Phase II, has now been completed, being inaugurated on February 25, 2009.

In addition to the ultra modern glass and steel structure, this Hi-tech airport of Amritsar, boasts passenger friendly facilities such as central air conditioning system, combined inline X-ray baggage inspection / conveyor system, escalators, and public address system. Flight Information Display, CCTV, check-in counters with Common Use Terminal Equipment and improved parking facilities are also included in the government initiative project.

The departure and arrival halls have facilities for duty free shops. The departure hall also accommodates foreign currency exchange, book stores, a restaurant and other shops for the convenience of departing passengers. Further improvements are planned and are expected to be completed by the end of 2010.

The Raja Sansi International Airport is located 11 km north-west from the city of Amritsar and is well connected to the roads and main highways of Punjab. The best way for visitors to transfer from the airport to the city is by taxi. It is recommended that you use the prepay taxi counter in the airport to save any hassle with charges. The use of other forms of public transport from the airport is currently rather poor although as with much of India this is set to be improved. A metro link is planned to join the airport with the excellent Indian rail network.
