Bengaluru International Airport

All UK to Bangalore flights, will arrive at the new Bengaluru International Airport (BLR) which opened for business in May 2008. The airport is located at Devanahalli which is 40km (25 miles) from the city. A high speed rail link is planned but will not be in operation before March 2010. Meanwhile Taxis, hire cars and buses are the options for transfer to the city centre. As with all locations within India we do not recommend that tourists or visitors hire self-drive cars although these are available from the airport. Two types of bus operate from the airport, Volvo buses with air conditioning and a non air-conditioned cheaper alternative. Unless you are on a very tight budget we would advise that you choose the Volvo. Note that due to the heavy congestion it can take up to 3 hours to travel between the city and the airport at peak times.

The international departure section of the airport will eventually house one of the largest duty free outlets in India. The arrival duty free outlet will offer liquor and tobacco, perfumes and cosmetics, electronics outlets and accessories. The arrival duty free has been designed with the increasing security regulations in mind. We are not able to say at the moment when work on these facilities will be completed.
