Indira Gandhi International
Airport

All UK to Delhi flights, will arrive at the
Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). The International
Terminal is 5km (3 miles) from the Domestic Terminal with
a free bus service connecting the two and operating every
30 minutes. The airport is located 20km (12 miles) south of
the city centre with taxis being the easiest way to get to
central Delhi, especially for those not familiar with the
city. Metered taxis can be found outside the airport, but
in order to eliminate any uncertainty over fares, it could
be considered preferable to use prepaid taxis available via
the taxi counter in arrivals. The journey time by taxi to
the city centre is around 30 minutes. Airport buses also leave
for central Delhi, operating 24 hours a day with a transfer
time to the city of approximately 45 minutes. It is also possible
to hire a car with driver at the airport. We do not recommend
that tourists or visitors hire self-drive cars although Avis
and Hertz both operate from the airport.
Do not expect a quick passage through the airport.
Do expect chaos, noise, slow progress and long queues. In
the Arrival Visitors Area of the International Terminal you
will find banks, bureaux de change and ATMs. ATMs are also
available within the domestic terminal if you are transferring
to an internal flight.
More information about the Indira Gandhi International
Airport including live flight information can be found on
the official website - Indira

Delhi
is truly a city of contrasts, noise, mayhem, incessant shouting
and gesticulation, abound. New Delhi, is the capital city
of India, having the seat of government and housing the Diplomatic
enclave where all the embassies are located. It is a rich
modern city of wide leafy avenues, tree-lined boulevards,
open parks and colonial mansions. In Old Delhi, visitors will
find a charming selection of colourful bazaars and narrow
winding alleys, manic and noisy. All the contrasts and traditions
that are typically India are to be found in Delhi from the
rich to the poor, from the modern to the old, from the squalor
to the exotic splendor. You will see bullock carts traveling
alongside the very latest luxury cars and don't forget the
abundance of rickshaws. People of all nationalities and backgrounds
can be seen sporting many and varied styles of dress, from
the suited business men, the western styled youngsters, to
those wearing traditional Indian dress and robed Holy men.
Theaters and cinemas host films and entertainment from all
over India, while some of the countries finest restaurants
can be found here, offering many styles of regional and international
cuisine.
To
many, Delhi is used as the gateway into India. From here they
will travel by domestic flights, bus or train to other destinations
far and wide. If your plan is to travel around India, be sure
to allow some time to explore Delhi, either when you first
arrive, or when you return before your flight home. While
Delhi itself would need a lifetime to explore, it is also
an ideal base for visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra to the southeast.
Delhi actually lies at the apex of an area known as "The
Golden Triangle" filled with ancient sites and monuments.
The best time to travel to Delhi is between
November and March, when the weather is warm and sunny. With
temperatures of up to 45°C, a Delhi holiday in summer is best
avoided unless you are acclimatised to intense heat. During
the summer months you are also likely to experience dust storms
and high humidity during the monsoon towards the end of June
